Spring has sprung...

...and it's time to get our garden in.
Alan informed me that our garden spot last year was small and that he wanted to at least triple the size...Ok honey :)...

So...the brown spot in the middle is the old garden, and the yellow and red flags mark out the "new" garden.
Unfortunately we don't have DIRT in our backyard...only clay...so we're mixing in old grass clippings and I'm thinking to myself..."isn't this how they make brick?" We'd probably be better off aving a kiln installed than a garden!

Luckily some friends of ours lent us a rototiller and we were off...sort of...We probably spent 10 hours turning the clay with a shovel and then going over it with the rototiller. After the third day and feeling like we weren't making much progress we decided we needed to mix in some sand. We had 6 ton delivered...(which they, of course, would only drop on the edge of the driveway so their truck wouldn't crack our drive) and spent the next couple days hauling it to the back and tilling it in...

Now that Jake is one we expect him to start pulling more of his weight around here so after a couple minutes of training with Dad...

...we put him out on his own. He did really well :)

I don't have any pictures of the official "final" non-planted garden yet, but you get the idea:)

So cute! He is so big! And I am glad you have already started teaching him the value of hard work.
